Our programmes form the basis of interaction and avenue for response to the challenges facing young people. The programmes are therefore aimed at working with young people in seeking solutions to these challenges within the context of our mission and vision and in line with our values. The choice of our programmatic and regional impact areas is guided by the needs of the poor as identified in formal quantitative ways and through participatory asessments; international and national polices and priorities with regard to development, and our comparative advantage in terms of expertise, experience, resources and the activities of other civil society organisations. Having started off with only two programme areas, Youth Alive! Kenya currently undertakes activities under four key programme areas of Health, Justice & Human Rights, Democracy & Governance and Environment & Livelihoods.
Health Programme The Health Programme of Youth Alive! Kenya seeks to reduce the burden of disease in Kenya by supporting the role of young people and local health systems in the prevention and management of disease and general health development. The programme works under two key components of Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) and HIV & AIDS. The ASRH component seeks to improve health and social awareness of young people and facilitate their access to appropriate and user-friendly reproductive health information and services to enable a fulfilling reproductive health life. The HIV & AIDS component seeks to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among young people in Kenya and mitigate the socio-economic impact of the pandemic on young people and their communities.
Justice & Human Rights Programme Justice & Human Rights Programme seeks to ensure access to justice by the most vulnerable and most marginalised and promote the respect for and the protection of human rights in Kenya. In particular, the programme hopes to: improve access to justice for disadvantaged children and young people from marginalised settings in Kenya; promote an effective justice system critical to the development of communities, accountable for public safety and the restoration of young offenders, and; inculcate the respect for human rights and promote human rights principles as the basis of peace and development. Democracy & Governance (D & G) Programme
The D & G Programme seeks to expand and sustain democratic space in in Kenya by strengthening the capacity of public institutions essential for democratic governace and the rule of law and improving the involvment of citizen's and their institutions in the promotion of democracy and good governance. Specifically the programme seeks to: expand democratic participation and support the development of a democratic culture among young people in Kenya; support the strengthening of key institutions essential for democracy and teh rule of law, and; stregnthen the capacity of young people and youth-led civil-society organisations in the promotionof democracy and good governance.
Environment & Livelihoods Programme
The Youth Alive! Kenya Environment & Livelihoods (E & L) Programme aims to protect the environment and use natural resources to create and improve livelihoods for poverty reduction and sustainable development. The programme works in three focalareas: natural resources managment; pollution & waste managment, and; energy.
